Comment Experimental evidence is presented here showing that vlmI is a regulatory gene in the valanimycin biosynthetic gene cluster of Streptomyces viridifaciens and encodes a protein belonging to the SARP(Streptomyces antibiotic regulatory protein) family. The vlmI gene contains two potential start sites. The shorter version of VlmI does not bind to these promoter regions. This suggests that the additional 55 amino acids present in the N terminus region of VlmI-L are important for the proper folding of the protein.
